Washington [US]: Selena Gomez has discussed the detrimental effects of body shaming, stating that remarks about her weight make her feel “a tad bitter.”
In a recent interview with the ‘On Purpose with Jay Shetty Podcast,’ Gomez reportedly expressed her annoyance at the ongoing attention she receives for her beauty, according to People magazine.
“Everyone has something to say,” she remarked, pointing out that problems with body image disproportionately impact women.
Gomez, who has been candid about her battles with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease, clarified that her medication causes her weight to fluctuate. She nonetheless emphasized that she puts her health above conventional beauty standards.
“I would rather be healthy and take care of myself,” she stated. She said, “My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me.”
The singer and actress also drew attention to the unfair treatment of males in body image debates, pointing out that they are not given the same consideration.
“It’s the character that gets judged,” she stated. She continued, “It’s the way I’m not white enough, I’m not Mexican enough… nobody cares about those kind of things with men.”
Gomez stated that although she does not consider herself a victim, she does want to bring attention to the unjust expectations that are put on women.
According to her, “I just think it’s made me a tad bitter,”
She also discussed avoiding social media and concentrating on her mental health as coping mechanisms for unfavorable remarks.
