Gujiya ingredients


Gather these essentials before you start making Gujiyas for the Holi celebrations!


For the stuffing:



  • ¾ cup dry coconut / kopra / desiccated coconut

  • ½ cup powdered sugar

  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds / khus khus

  • 5 cashews, chopped

  • 10 raisins, chopped

  • 5 almonds, chopped

  • ¼ tsp cardamom powder


For the dough:



  • 1 cup maida / all-purpose flour / plain flour

  • Salt to taste

  • 2 tbsp ghee, hot

  • ½ cup warm milk, or as required to knead the dough


How to Make Gujiya for Holi


Follow these steps carefully to prepare delicious Gujiyas and enhance your Holi celebrations!


Making the stuffing:



  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry coconut.

  • Add powdered sugar and poppy seeds.

  • Mix in the chopped dry fruits.

  • Sprinkle in the cardamom powder and mix well.

  • The stuffing is now ready for karanjis. Set it aside.


Making the dough for Gujiya:



  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the maida (all-purpose flour) and salt.

  • Pour very hot ghee over the maida.

  • Rub and crumble the dough well between your fingers.

  • Gradually add milk and knead into a soft dough.

  • Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.


Assembling the Gujiya:



  • Pinch a small portion of dough and roll it into a ball.

  • Flatten it into a slightly thick puri, then cut it into a round shape.

  • Lightly grease the edges of the puri with warm milk.

  • Place a teaspoon of the prepared coconut stuffing in the centre.

  • Seal the edges by pressing them together gently.

  • Neatly fold and press the edges inward for a polished finish.

  • Fold the tip that extends outward, press it, and fold again.

  • Deep-fry the karanjis in hot oil until they turn golden brown.

  • Drain them on a kitchen towel and serve warm.
