Winning the toss and fielding first, Meg Lanning’s decision was backed by Shikha Pandey who starred with the new ball and drew the outside edge of Hayley Matthews in the first over itself. She followed it up by uprooting Yastika Bhatia’s stumps, before Natalie Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur stabilised the stage with a solid partnership. However, Harmanpreet failed to adapt for long as the aggressive intent brought down her downfall, making way for Amelia Kerr who was run out accidentally.
After rotating the strike on the first couple of balls, Sciver-Brunt drove a fuller, flighted delivery at the stumps from Mani on the third ball of the 14th over down the line. The ricocheting white rock hurled towards the bowler who tried to grab it but failed to do so firmly, resulting in a deflection onto the bowler’s end stumps. Meanwhile, Kerr at the same end left the crease as the bowler released the ball before heading to followthrough. Eventually, it was vivid to the onfield umpire that the Kiwi was run out, sparking a Twitterverse empathy on Kerr.
