The local police chief, Roberto Eid Forest, said Tuesday night, “We do not think there is any terror motive behind this, but it is too early in the investigation to say,” according to the New York Times. “We think we have the perpetrator,” he said, “but we are not ruling out anything.”

According to the New York Times, the shooting occurred at the Risbergska educational facility in Orebro at around 12:30 PM local time. According to the website of the Örebro municipality, the campus, which has 2,000 students, provides Swedish-language and vocational courses as well as lessons for adults pursuing a high school diploma.

While some students left the building toward emergency service cars, others sought cover behind desks and chairs, according to cellphone video shown on local television stations. As of late Tuesday, it was still unknown how many people had been hurt. Authorities began a “major operation,” guarding the school with armed special forces personnel and flooding it with police vehicles. Additionally, police looked at a number of city addresses.

Dozens of students and kids were able to go as the police cleared the center’s classrooms after a few hours. Ulf Kristersson, the prime minister of Sweden, described the tragedy as “the worst mass shooting in Swedish history” in a statement. He said in a broadcast speech, “We have seen a brutal act of violence,” according to the New York Times. Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, also conveyed her sorrow over the tragedy.

“What happened in Örebro today is really appalling. There is no place for such horror and violence in our society, much less in schools. We support the people of Sweden at this difficult time. She posted on X, saying, “We wish the victims strength and a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with them.”
