The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune has produced some of Bollywood’s finest actors, and among its alumni are two prominent names: Shakti Kapoor and Mithun Chakraborty. Mithun was Shakti’s senior at the institute. After completing their courses, both actors made a lasting impact on audiences and even worked together in several films, including Gunda, Guru, Kranti Kshetra, Baadal, Pyaar Ka Karz, and Dalaal. While the two are good friends today, their relationship wasn’t always so friendly.

In an interview, Shakti Kapoor shared an incident from his FTII days when Mithun ragged him and left him in tears. The story dates back to when Shakti first joined FTII, where he became friends with Ravi Varman and Anil Varman. Through them, he met actors Rakesh Roshan, Vinod Khanna, and music director Rajesh Roshan.

The veteran actor recalled, “By the time we reached Pune, I had a beer in my hand and felt like a star. When we reached the (FTII) hostel, Rakesh Roshan was there to see me off. I saw a guy standing at the gate, wearing a dhoti with a muscular body. His dhoti had so many holes, you couldn’t even count them. He was dusky. He saw Rakesh Roshan and touched his feet.”

He continued, “I had a beer in my hand and asked him, ‘You wanna have some beer?’ He refused and said it was not allowed in the institute. He then introduced himself – he was Mithun Chakraborty. After that, Rakesh and the others left, and a hand grabbed me by my leg. Mithun dragged me to a room, threw me on the floor, and asked, ‘You asked a senior – you wanna have some beer? How dare you?’”

Shakti explained that all of them were his seniors. He further shared that Mithun told his friends about the incident and joked about his hair, saying, “Tere zulf jo hai, raat ka andhera, tu jo sir mudwae savera ho jae.” Mithun then took out scissors and gave Shakti a “new look.”

Shakti was then asked to swim for 20 minutes in the cold night. Looking back at the incident, he admitted that he regretted his actions and begged his seniors to let him return home to Delhi. “I was looking like a monkey. I started crying, touched their feet,” Shakti recalled. “They took me to the swimming pool and told me to do 40 laps. I started crying, and they gave me a break.” Mithun eventually came to his aid and advised him to remember how to show respect to seniors.
