This dam was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur, located near Sumerpur city in Pali district of Rajasthan state of India. Jawai Dam is located in the most bumpy and wild part of the Aravalli hills in Pali, Rajsamand and Udaipur districts of Rajasthan. The idea of ​​building a dam on the Jawai river came in 1903 as its flood waters had caused heavy damage to Pali and Jalore districts during the monsoon. It was eventually shaped in 1946. The purpose of this project was to build a reservoir by building a dam on the river, which can be used for water irrigation and hydropower generation. The construction work of this dam started on 12 May 1946, which was completed in 1957. The construction of this dam was started under the direction of British engineers Edgar and Fergusan, although the construction of Azadi was completed under the supervision of Moti Singh.

It is the largest man -made dam in western Rajasthan, which covers an area of ​​about 13 square kilometers. With a capacity of 7887.5 million cubic feet, the dam meets the irrigation requirements on 102,315 acres of land. The Jnai Dam forms a catchment area of ​​about 720 square kilometers with a height of about 61.25 feet. To meet the water supply of this dam spread over an area of ​​about 500 sq km, Sei and Kalibor feeder dams have also been built on it.
