Universal Pictures has shuffled the release dates of two highly anticipated animated films. The studio announced that Shrek 5 will now hit theaters on December 23, 2026, instead of its earlier July 1 release date. Meanwhile, Minions 3 will move up from June 2027 to July 1, 2026, filling the summer slot originally planned for Shrek 5.

This change means Shrek 5 will arrive just in time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the franchise that began in 2001. Fans can look forward to the return of the original voice cast, including Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona.

Directed by franchise veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, Shrek 5 will also have Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri producing. Meledandri is well-known for producing hit animated movies like Despicable Me, Minions, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The Shrek series has been a massive success, with its four films earning over $2.9 billion globally. Besides the movies, it has inspired a Broadway musical, a live-touring show, and attractions at Universal Studios theme parks.

On the other hand, Minions 3 will follow the blockbuster success of Despicable Me 4, which made $230 million worldwide during its opening weekend. The Despicable Me and Minions franchises have collectively grossed nearly $5 billion globally.

Directed by Pierre Coffin, who also voices the Minions, Minions 3 will feature a script by Brian Lynch and production by Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan.

Universal also announced another change: an untitled Illumination movie that was set for March 2027 will now take the June 2027 slot.

Both films promise to bring plenty of fun to audiences, with Shrek 5 offering a nostalgic holiday treat and Minions 3 dominating the summer box office.
