The UP government has been pushed by the city authorities to designate as a national highway a thirty-kilometer section of the Yamuna Pushta Road, which runs from Sector 94, close to the Delhi boundary at Kalindi Kunj barrage, to Sector 150. The section connects to the Yamuna Expressway close to Pari Chowk and goes parallel to the Noida Expressway.
As to a report by TOI, the planned development of a new highway over a 30-kilometer length is necessary to handle the anticipated increase in traffic resulting from the growing corporate presence and the future Noida International Airport, which is set to start operations in April of the following year.
The Noida Authority stressed in a letter to the Public Works Department (PWD) principal department that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) can build the road if it is designated as a national highway. The road is currently underutilized because of poor condition.
The NHAI withdrew from the project in February, citing administrative delays, according to the TOI article. A number of state and federal government permits must be obtained before a route can be designated as a national highway, and this may be a protracted process.
Although the 11-kilometer length of the Pushta Road was opened to traffic in 2014, it has already accumulated potholes and uneven areas. According to the TOI article, the Noida Authority suggested last year to build a bypass on Pushta Road in order to relieve traffic on the clogged Noida Expressway, which sees almost 5 lakh cars every day. Of these, around 2 lakh cars access the expressway via the DND Flyway, while 1 lakh vehicles enter from Kalindi Kunj, the border with Chilla, and other locations such as sectors 15, 16, 18, and 37.
The Noida Authority has suggested turning the section into a six-lane elevated corridor or an eight-lane road. A team led by Additional CEO Sanjay Khatri was formed by Noida Authority CEO Lokesh in November of last year to carry out a feasibility assessment. The committee produced a thorough study that included information on elevated road portions, land availability, sectors involved, and traffic estimates in collaboration with the irrigation department and NHAI.
An estimated Rs 15,000 crore will be needed to build the elevated road. In contrast, the TOI article said that the anticipated cost of expanding and fixing the current road is between Rs 400 and Rs 500 crore.
