Experts said on Thursday that in the wake of news of a young chartered accountant in Pune dying from work-related stress, weariness, insomnia, and recurrent sickness are warning indicators of burnout and fatigue and should prompt assistance.

According to her mother, Anita Augustine, Anna Sebastian Perayil (26), died as a result of a “backbreaking workload” and “work stress” at Ernst & Young (EY) in a heartbreaking letter to Chairman Rajiv Memani.

Despite having worked for the accounting business for four months, Perayil’s burial was attended by no one from the workplace.

Perayil isn’t alone himself. Satish Nandgaonkar, a top writer for Hindustan Times headquartered in Mumbai, passed away earlier this year from a cardiac arrest outside the daily’s office. It was alleged that he had been “humiliated” at work in the hours before the incident.

In a very sad incident, 25-year-old Saurabh Kumar Laddha of McKinsey & Company is said to have taken his own life by leaping from the ninth story of his Mumbai building because he could no longer bear the burden of his job.

Many more names might be added to the list.

Aster Whitefield Hospital in Bengaluru’s Lead Consultant and Head of Internal Medicine, Dr. Suchismitha Rajamanya, told IANS that “roughly 6 to 10 patients come seeking help, reporting stress and exhaustion” virtually every week.

Physical indicators of burnout and weariness include persistent tiredness, sleeplessness, and recurrent diseases, according to Rajamanya.

According to the expert, stress may also show itself as a lack of enthusiasm to maintain one’s look, frustration, discouragement, emotional exhaustion, absenteeism, declining productivity, and reluctance to accomplish duties assigned at work. People may also have trouble focusing and remembering things.

The important thing in this situation, according to Rajamanya, is to keep oneself from “getting to that point” and to know when someone needs assistance.

According to a recent study by the workplace evaluation and recognition organization Great Place To Work India, one in four workers find it difficult to discuss mental health concerns like stress, burnout, anxiety, or depression at work. With 56% of workers experiencing burnout, it became apparent that this was a serious issue.

Research has also shown the detrimental effects of job stress on health. High work strain and an effort-reward imbalance have been linked to a considerable increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib), an abnormal heart rhythm. This finding was reported in recent research that was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

You should “think more practically rather than emotionally, and to strike a balance between their emotions and practical life,” according to Divya Mohindroo, founder of Embrace Imperfections and a counseling psychologist who spoke with IANS on this topic.

She also offered some easy everyday actions that people may do to lessen the negative effects of stress in their lives.

“Eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water throughout the day to help flush out toxins, and work out for 45 minutes to sweat out your woes and release feel-good hormones.” Maintaining a sound sleep pattern is crucial, according to Mohindroo.

The experts also advised contacting friends, family, support groups, a psychologist, or a counselor in addition to practicing stress-reduction methods like deep breathing or meditation.
