Diseases are rapidly increasing among people due to poor lifestyle choices and the consumption of unhealthy foods. Nowadays, from young children to the elderly, many have started eating junk food. Additionally, the craze for ultra-processed foods has surged among people today. However, consuming such foods can be harmful to health in many ways. According to a study recently published in The Lancet Regional Health, Europe, eating certain ultra-processed foods can increase the risk of diabetes .

Ultra-processed foods increase the risk of diabetes

According to the researchers, consuming some ultra-processed foods increases the risk of diabetes. The study was conducted on 312,000 people from eight European countries. Participants were monitored for 11 years, and it was found that eating ultra-processed foods increased the risk of type 2 diabetes in about 15,000 people.

Avoid these foods

The study's researchers identified specific ultra-processed foods that pose a greater risk of diabetes than others. These include cookies, candy, packaged chips, and snacks. Additionally, foods heated in microwaves or those packed in cans also contribute to a higher risk of diabetes.

Risk increases by up to 17 percent
According to Rachel Batterham, Professor of Obesity, Diabetes, and Endocrinology at University College London, some foods contain artificial colors or sweeteners to enhance their taste. These foods also contain preservatives, and their consumption can increase the risk of diabetes by up to 17 percent compared to other foods.

Risk of ultra-processed foods

Ultra-processed foods, often laden with additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients, pose significant health risks. These foods, which include packaged snacks, sugary beverages, and ready-to-eat meals, undergo extensive industrial processing, stripping them of essential nutrients. Studies have linked frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods to an increased risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and even certain cancers. The high levels of added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium contribute to weight gain, insulin resistance, and inflammation. Limiting intake of such foods is crucial for maintaining long-term health and reducing the risk of lifestyle-related diseases.
