On social media, a lady who wants to outlaw Urdu and bring back Sanskrit is drawing mockery for choosing English to express her views. The linguistic “chauvinist,” also known on X as “The Kerala Girl,” posted an image of a sign that reads, “Stop Urdu.” Restore Sanskrit. Put an end to the linguistic war. Stay together.

The caption said, “Divided we fall, united we stand.” Put an end to the linguistic conflict. Both Urdu people and British people were alien. They split us apart.


While several emphasized how Hindi’s lexical impact may be seen in Urdu, others also noted how Sanskrit itself had certain parallels with the Indo-European language family.

Some saw irony in the English writing on the banner, which was pro-Sanskrit and opposed to Urdu.


They thought it incongruous that someone, employing a third, completely distinct language with its own colonial heritage in India, was pushing for the rebirth of one language while outlawing another.


To put it plainly, “Stop using English; it’s British.”


“Fighting for Sanskrit against Urdu in English” was how another put it.


India recognizes 22 official languages, including Urdu and Sanskrit. Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kashmiri, Kannada, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Santali, Sindhi, Tamil, and Telugu are the other twenty languages.


Sanskrit is the oldest of the two languages in issue, having been around for thousands of years. The Vedas, which are regarded as the world’s oldest sacred writings, are written in this language.


The medieval era is when Urdu first emerged, making it a comparatively recent development.


After September 14’s celebration of Hindi Day, or Hindi Diwas, the discussion has just taken place.
