# Katarmal Sun Temple

Located about 19 km from Almora, this ancient temple is dedicated to Burhadita (the Sun God) and stands at an altitude of 2,116 meters. It is one of the most significant historical sites in the Kumaon region. The temple complex features a main shrine surrounded by around 45 smaller temples adorned with intricate carvings. Idols of Shiva-Parvati and Lakshmi are also housed here.

Facing east, the temple welcomes the first rays of the sun, which illuminate the Shiva Lingam. Its stone architecture, detailed pillars, and carved wooden doors add to its timeless charm. Reaching the temple requires a 2 km uphill walk, offering glimpses of local village life along the way.

The sanctuary is home to over 200 bird species, including blackbirds, parakeets, and laughing thrushes. Wildlife such as barking deer, Himalayan black bears, musk deer, langurs, and flying squirrels can also be spotted here.
