‘Thappad Scandal’: The famous ‘Thappad scandal’ of Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth has once again come into the headlines. This controversy of the first season of IPL is now in the news again, because Sreesanth has recently claimed that Harbhajan Singh has earned around Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1 crore from this incident. He also said that he has forgiven Bhajji, but will never forget this incident. This case pertains to the first season of IPL 2008, when Harbhajan Singh was playing for Mumbai Indians, while Sreesanth was a part of Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab). After the end of the match between the two teams, Harbhajan slapped Sreesanth during the handshake of the players. After this incident, Harbhajan Singh was also banned.
Recently, former IPL chairman Lalit Modi once again brought this controversy into discussion by sharing the video of this slapping incident on social media. After this, Sreesanth openly expressed his displeasure in a conversation with Malayalam news outlet ‘Mathrubhoomi’. Sreesanth said, “I never talked about bhajji in any interview. But recently he did an advertisement on this incident and earned around Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1 crore from it. Then he called me and asked me to post a story on it. I told him – I will forgive, but will never forget.”
He further said that if someone does wrong to you, then you must forgive him, but you should not forget, because if you forget, the same mistake can happen again. Sreesanth described Harbhajan as the biggest example of this. Sreesanth also clearly said that now he has no relation with Harbhajan Singh. He said, “I used to call him brother, but now I have blocked him on Instagram. My parents taught me to forgive, but never forget. I have no grudge against him, nor do I need him.” It is clear from his statement that even though this dispute of 2008 is old, its scars are still clearly visible in the relationship between the two players.
