The Maldives has enacted a new anti-narcotics law, which includes provisions for the death penalty for drug traffickers; Whether they are citizens of another country or not, the punishment will be the same for everyone. Therefore, passengers are advised to familiarize themselves with the Maldives’ strict anti-narcotics laws before boarding or deboarding their flight. Recently, Maldives Police has arrested several Indian citizens for possessing narcotics.

The new rules under the Narcotics Act are very strict
Acting on the guidelines of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the Maldives government amended its Narcotics Act in March 2026, making it much stricter than before. Under the new rules, smuggling or possessing drugs in the Maldives can now be punished with life imprisonment. In cases of serious crimes, the death penalty may also be imposed. This law provides for very severe punishment for possession of even small quantities of narcotics.

Many Indians arrested in Maldives
Following reports and complaints received from Maldives Police regarding Indian nationals, the Indian High Commission and NCB have issued an advisory and warning. All Indians traveling to Maldives are strictly advised not to carry any parcel, bag or packet from friends, relatives, acquaintances or strangers. If you must transport such an item under any circumstances, ensure that the items being sent are packed in bags or parcels in your presence.

Someone else’s trouble can become your punishment
According to the advisory, passengers should be cautious of strangers at the airport. If a stranger asks you to carry something or a package for them—be it to India or the Maldives—then flatly refuse. No matter their personal problem or great compulsion, you must refuse; Otherwise, you may have to face punishment due to their condition. Keep a constant eye on your luggage until you reach your destination safely in India or Maldives, so that no one can secretly put any prohibited thing in your bag.

Report harassment to the helpline
According to NCB, if you are caught, making the excuse of ignorance of the law will not be valid for your defence. In any country, this excuse will not save you from punishment. If anyone insists on you taking any item, parcel or packet with you, please report it to MANAS—National Narcotics Helpline—on 1933. Simply put, Maldives adopts a ‘zero tolerance’ policy when it comes to drug trafficking; Therefore, vigilance is your only protection.
