The Punjab Police have formally approached the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), seeking a ban on the upcoming docu-series Lawrence of Punjabwhich is slated to premiere on ZEE5 on April 27. The request includes a call to stop the streaming of the series and remove its trailer globally, citing potential risks associated with its content.
Concerns Over Glorification of Crime
Authorities have raised serious objections to the show’s portrayal of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, whose life and criminal activities reportedly form the core of the narrative. According to the police, the series may “glorify and simplify organised crime,”. Officials also warned that such portrayals could negatively impact public perception and disrupt law and order in the state.
Legal Grounds and Court Observations

The ban request has been made under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, along with relevant blocking rules. Punjab Police also referenced earlier observations by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had taken note of interviews of Bishnoi. The court had flagged concerns that such content could encourage criminal activity and interfere with ongoing investigations.
Political and Public Pushback Grows

The controversy extends beyond law enforcement. Political leaders have also strongly opposed the series. Someone has proposed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), arguing that the show risks misrepresenting facts.
Larger Debate Around Crime Content on OTT

This development comes amid increasing scrutiny of crime-based content on digital platforms. As of now, the Ministry has not responded to the ban request, leaving the April 27 release hanging in uncertainty.
