Dehradun: Today, on April 23, skies across the state remained clear, offering relief to pilgrims and residents, especially during the auspicious opening of Badrinath Dham.
However, this calm will be short-lived, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for rain, snowfall, and thunderstorms starting April 24.
According to IMD, a new western disturbance will become active from April 24, affecting districts like Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. These areas are expected to witness rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall at elevations above 4,000 metres. Night temperatures in the hills may drop significantly, while daytime heat will continue in the plains.
In contrast, districts in plains such as Dehradun, Haridwar, and Udham Singh Nagar will remain dry. The sun will be harsh, and temperatures are expected to rise by 3–4 degrees above normal. Hot winds and humidity will add to discomfort, creating heatwave-like conditions. Roads may remain deserted during peak afternoon hours, and night temperatures are also likely to rise.
– April 24: Clear skies will give way to rain and thunderstorms in hilly districts. Plains may see temperatures rising to 39°C.
– April 25: Moderate rain, hailstorms, and thunderstorms are expected in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. Dust storms may occur in some areas.
– April 26: Isolated light to moderate rain and thundershowers in hilly districts; plains remain dry with maximum temperature around 38°C.
– April 27–28: Light to moderate rain and thundershowers likely in hilly districts, while plains continue to face hot and dry weather.
Weather experts warn that these contrasting conditions—snowfall in the hills and heat in the plains—could affect agriculture and public life. Farmers may face challenges due to sudden rain and hailstorms, while rising temperatures in the plains could impact crops and increase water demand.
– April 23: Minimum 19°C, maximum 38°C.
– April 24: Minimum 20°C, maximum 39°C.
– April 25: Minimum 21°C, maximum 39°C, cloudy skies, dust storm possible.
– April 26: Minimum 21°C, maximum 38°C, cloudy with rain chances.
– April 27: Minimum 21°C, maximum 38°C.
Uttarakhand is set to experience a mix of weather conditions in the coming days. While pilgrims and residents enjoyed clear skies on April 23, the arrival of a western disturbance from April 24 will bring rain, snowfall, and thunderstorms to the hills, while the plains continue to battle rising heat.
