New Delhi: Chelsea have sacked manager Liam Rosenior amid the club’s dreadful run in the English Premier League. Chelsea confirmed the decision on Wednesday, April 22, following their 3-0 defeat against Brighton. The club have parted ways with Rosenior after less than four months in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Rosenior was appointed as the new Chelsea manager, replacing Enzo Maresca in January this year. He signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the Blues. However, his stint has been cut short in less than half a year, in what appears to be another one of Chelsea’s managerial blunders in recent times.

Rosenior, who worked under Wayne Rooney as his assistant at Derby County, joined Chelsea from Ligue 1 club Strasbourg. There were major doubts over his credentials at the time of his appointment, with many questioning Chelsea’s move to hand a long-term contract to an unproven manager.

As it turned out, Rosenior was sacked on Wednesday after managing only 11 wins in 23 games in charge at Chelsea across all competitions. Chelsea have lost their last five Premier League games in a row while failing to score in any of them. The five-match goalless streak in the league is Chelsea’s first since 1912, highlighting their woes under the English manager.

“This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future,” Chelsea said in a statement.

Rosenior was booed by the Chelsea fans following their 3-0 loss against Brighton in the Premier League. The English manager later slammed his players for a performance that he labelled ‘unacceptable’. The club were reportedly not thinking about reviewing Rosenior’s position so early into his tenure, but a string of poor results forced them to act sooner than expected.

Calum McFarlane named interim coach for remainder of season

Chelsea have named Calum McFarlane as the interim coach for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. McFarlane earlier served in an interim role when the club sacked Maresca in January this year. He oversaw Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

But McFarlane is set to have a more important role this time around as he will be in charge of Chelsea’s FA Cup semifinal against Leeds United. Chelsea are currently seventh on the Premier League points table and are fighting for a spot in the top five to qualify for the Champions League next season.

However, winning the FA Cup seems a more realistic option to qualify for Europe for the Blues. McFarlane will thus have to play a crucial role if Chelsea are to make it to the Champions League next season.
