Narita International Airport near Japan’s Tokyo has reopened part of its Terminal 1 building since this month, unveiling a revamped observation deck designed to draw visitors with features including footbaths and a tatami mat relaxation area.

The reopening follows a renovation of the fifth floor of the terminal’s Central Building costing about 2.5 billion yen (US$15.7 million), Kyodo News reported.

Work began in April last year and covered roughly 8,000 square meters both inside and outside Terminal 1.

The project is part of efforts to showcase Japanese culture and seasonal changes to both domestic and international travelers, the airport said.

The updated observatory area, named Garden Walk, includes a stepped viewing platform that allows visitors to watch aircraft take off and land without obstruction, Japan’s Mainichi newspaper reported.

It also features footbaths and a tatami space within a broader relaxation zone equipped with various seating options, including sofas accommodating up to 130 people.

Located around 60 kilometers from Japan’s capital Tokyo, Narita Airport was named the world’s best airport for staff service as part of the 2026 World Airport Awards by London-based aviation consultancy Skytrax.

The airport is known for its high-quality service, diverse shopping, and for having the longest runway in Japan.

It is also praised by passengers for its polite, efficient, and helpful staff.
