One of the UK's most popular beaches has announced a new access rule coming into force in just a few weeks. West Wittering in Sussex was named one of the best beaches in the country by Conde Nast Traveller earlier this month, and while its white sand and expansive coastline certainly make it a top contender, a downside of ranking highly is the potential for overcrowding.

In a bid to prevent chaos ensuing as UK weather warms up, the West Wittering estate has announced a new rule for accessing the beach over the summer months, with the change set to be enforced from May 1. Under the rule, coach visits won't be permitted between May and August, with exemptions in place for school coaches and potentially also supervised group trips. It follows a review of peak-time pressures by the estate, which is responsible for managing the beach.

A spokesperson said: "West Wittering Beach is a natural, family-friendly environment and during busy periods our priority is to make sure everyone can enjoy the beach safely, comfortably and respectfully."

The change means coaches will not be allowed to even drop visitors off at the beach, with the nearest public parking facilities located in nearby Chichester, according to The Argus.

News of the restriction received a generally positive response on social media, with commentators remembering "shocking" behaviour from coach parties in years gone by.

One person said: "Thank goodness. Last summer was crazy. Never seen so many coaches or people ever."

"I know it's a lovely beach and everyone wants to enjoy it, but protecting the sand dunes and people's safety seems like the right decision," they added.

Another said: "Last year I was so shocked at how coach parties didn't know how to respect this beautiful beach. It's a very precious area. Let's keep it this way."

As well as earning praise from Conde Nast, which compared it to scenic US beaches in Cape Cod and the Hamptons, West Wittering has an average of four stars on TripAdvisor, with recent reviews lauding its "gorgeous scenery".
