Ayush Mhatre's absence is a serious blow for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026. The young batter was ruled out due to a hamstring injury that he sustained while batting against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. Mhatre, aged 18, is likely to be out for 6-12 weeks.
CSK, in a social media post, stated:
"Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to a left hamstring injury sustained while batting during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. Ayush's injury will require a rehabilitation period of 6-12 weeks."
The right-handed batter was the star of CSK this season scoring 201 runs from six matches at a strike rate of just under 178. The fearless opening batter provided strong foundations for CSK.
Following Mhatre's injury, batting coach Mike Hussey said:
"It looks pretty bad, unfortunately. And he's going to be a big, big loss because he's been in really nice touch for us."
Chennai Super Kings have already had a torrid IPL 2026 season, losing four of the six matches they have played so far. They are currently placed at the bottom half of the table.

R Ashwin Suggests IPL Loan Move for RCB Youngster
During Chennai Super Kings' spate of injuries and health problems, former spinner R Ashwin has provided a somewhat surprising remedy. He has recommended that CSK exploit the IPL's loan mechanism to obtain either RCB youngster Vihaan Malhotra or India U-19 prospect Abhigyan Kundu as short-term replacements.
On X, Ashwin explained his suggestion:
"With so many injuries on the horizon, the loan window closes after the seventh game mark, and it would be a great idea to loan this sensational talent from RCB. He hasn't played a single game so far, hence it is a viable option. If not Vihaan, Abhigyan Kundu is also a left-handed option that can be groomed, keeping the 'future core' in mind."
In response to a comment concerning rivalry, the spinner stated:
"One team is comfortably placed and the other isn't competing with them at the moment, so there is an opportunity to make some money, and the player also gets a chance to play. He is going to be back with the original franchise after a few games."
The notion is a debatable one since not one single IPL team has to date managed to use the loan facility while participating in actual matches, despite its presence in the IPL for over 6 years, since 2018. For the time being, it is assumed that Chennai Super Kings would look elsewhere for their replacements while nursing their latest major injury blow.
