Songs are an important part of our lives. It evokes emotions and consumes our souls with lyrics, music, beats, rhythm and melody. Sometimes you just vibe on a track alone and at other times you dance your heart out with friends on peppy numbers, but on occasion, when you are having a rough day or are feeling something you cannot really put into words, you understand the lyrics, perhaps trying to make sense of everything around you, or simply finding relief with a relatable verse.

One song that makes you pause, think and reflect on what life actually means is titled The Nights by the late Swedish DJ and producer Avicii. His real name was Tim Bergling. The song lyric goes like this, ‘One day, you will leave this world behind, so live a life you will remember. My father told me when I was just a child, these are the nights that never die.’

Deeper meaning behind Avicii’s song

The Nights by Avicii, also featuring vocals from singer/songwriter Nicholas Furlong, was originally released on his 2014 EP titled The Days / Nights. It was later included on his second studio album, Stories, released in October 2015. Even before its inclusion in the album, the track became an instant hit, striking a chord with the masses.

At its core, the line sheds light on a beautiful father-son relationship where the dad, with his years of wisdom, is telling his son that death is inevitable and just like every mortal on this planet, he will also pass away. But the thought of death should not stop a person from enjoying life to the fullest, dreaming big, achieving goals, falling in love, forging meaningful friendships and making lasting memories through diverse experiences.

In short, the father encourages the child to move past his fears, insecurity and inhibitions to live a life according to his own will, taking every day as a blessing, as a new opportunity to breathe and be happy, rather than playing it safe all the time. It’s one life and you have one chance to grab everything you want before it's too late.

More about Avicii and his music

Since Avicii’s passing in 2018, the song has taken on a much more poignant meaning for fans. It is often cited as his ‘manifesto’, a reminder to focus on legacy and joy over the mundane grind. The lyrics act as a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy: he lived a short but incredibly impactful life, and his music created the very ‘nights that never die’ for millions of people worldwide. Interestingly, the music video features professional ‘life-liver’ Rory Kramer, showcasing a montage of high-adrenaline stunts and travel, perfectly capturing the song's ‘carpe diem (seize the day)’ spirit.

Avicii, born in Stockholm as Tim Bergling, began releasing electronic dance music in 2008. Within 3 years, he had risen to international fame, earning a Grammy nomination in 2012 for his collaboration on the David Guetta track Sunshine and another in 2013 for his iconic club hit Levels. Avicii continued to produce chart-topping hits such as his 2013 single Wake Me Up, embarking on 3 global tours in the span of three years.

Despite his success, the demands of Avicii’s career took a toll on his well-being. The hitmaker had a series of physical and mental health problems over the years. Avicii was found dead at an estate in Muscat, Oman, on April 20, 2018. He was 28. His tragic death came two years after he announced his retirement from touring in March 2016 to prioritize his mental and physical health.
