Yadgir: A shocking alleged breach of public trust has surfaced in Yadgir district, where a government-owned building, meant to serve the underprivileged, stands accused of being illegally converted into a private coaching centre. The Ambedkar Pre-Matric Boys’ Hostel, operating under the Social Welfare Department and situated near Lingeri station in Yadgir taluk, is at the heart of the burgeoning scandal.
Local residents and social activists are demanding immediate action against officials, alleging that a private individual has been openly running a profit-making enterprise from the very premises designated for the welfare of students.
The allegations pinpoint one Devindrappa as the person behind the unauthorised operation. Sources indicate that Devindrappa has reportedly been paying money to certain authorities to “rent” the hostel building, subsequently transforming it into a makeshift coaching centre. Under the guise of “summer camps,” this private venture is said to be catering to more than 50 children.
What has particularly sparked outrage among the community is the alleged fee structure. While the hostel is intended to provide free or subsidised accommodation and support, Devindrappa is reportedly charging students a hefty sum of Rs. 5,000 per month for the coaching services.
Furthermore, there are claims that not only are the hostel’s official residents being tutored, but students from outside are also being admitted, effectively privatising a public asset. Disturbingly, reports suggest these paying students are even being housed overnight in the hostel rooms.
The gravity of the situation has stirred significant local anger. Social activist Umesh, alongside local resident Nagaraj, has vocally condemned the misuse of government property and the apparent flouting of regulations. They argue that such an act undermines the very purpose of the Social Welfare Department, which is meant to safeguard and uplift vulnerable sections of society.
“This is an absolute outrage. A building meant for the welfare of our children is being used for someone’s personal profit, and officials seem to be turning a blind eye, or worse, facilitating it,” said Nagaraj. Umesh echoed the sentiment, demanding a thorough investigation. “We need a full inquiry into this matter, and strict action must be taken against any Social Welfare Department officials found complicit in this blatant misuse of public resources.”
