LPG Alternative: LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) has been used in Indian kitchens for years, but now a new option is increasingly being discussed, DME (Dimethyl Ether). It is being considered as a possible alternative to LPG, because it is not only cheaper but is also better for the environment and can be prepared in the country itself. While India has to rely largely on imports for LPG, DME can be made from domestic resources.

What is DME and how does it work?

DME is a synthetic fuel, which works like LPG. It is stored in liquid form and can be used in the kitchen like gas. Its most important thing is that it spreads very little pollution when burnt. Scientists call it “future-ready” Fuel is considered because it comes in clean energy category. Interestingly, DME can also be produced from waste, stubble, biomass and industrial emissions, making it even more beneficial for the environment.

Why can DME replace LPG?

The biggest strength of DME is that it can easily work with existing LPG infrastructure. This means there will be no need to change gas stoves, pipelines or cylinders in homes. Apart from this, its performance is also considered almost equal to LPG, so users will not feel much difference in usage. This is the reason why it is being considered an economical and easy option for the common people.

Clean kitchen and less pollution

DME is said to be a cleaner fuel than LPG. It releases negligible soot and poisonous smoke when burnt. Its direct benefit is that the kitchen remains clean and black layer does not accumulate on the utensils. Besides, there is less pollution in the air, which has a positive effect on health.

India’s self-reliance will get a boost

India is currently largely dependent on imports for LPG, due to which prices remain fluctuating. But DME can be made from coal, biomass and other resources within the country. This will not only reduce imports but will also save foreign exchange. This step can play an important role in making India self-reliant in energy matters.

Easy to adopt, strong future

According to experts, initially DME can be used by mixing it with LPG. Up to 20% DME can be blended in the existing cylinder and no changes will be required for this. This means that common people will gradually start adopting this new fuel without any problem.
