BCCI has made it clear that such situations may arise in future when two different T20 teams of India are playing series against two different countries at the same time. The main objective of this ‘Split Team’ strategy is to manage the workload of the players and prepare an unbeatable team for the T20 World Cup 2026.

Special ‘pool’ of 30-35 players

According to BCCI sources, the selection committee will no longer be limited to only 15-20 players. the board has 30 to 35 talented players Instructions have been given to prepare a list of candidates who will be given continuous opportunities under the rotation policy.

Benefit: This will give rest to the main players before big tournaments and international experience to the backup players.

Injury Backup: If a star player gets injured, the team will have a ready-made experienced replacement.

Why was there a need for two teams?

Busy Schedule: Between IPL, ICC events and bilateral series, it is not possible for senior players to play every match.

Specialist Culture: The board now wants to prepare separate specialists for red ball (Test) and white ball (T20/ODI).

Opportunity for youth: Rising stars like Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag and Mayank Yadav will be able to get adequate matches even in the presence of senior players.

The experiment has been done before

Recall that in the year 2021 also, India had conducted such an experiment, when the main team under the captaincy of Virat Kohli was playing a Test series in England and a young team led by Shikhar Dhawan was playing a limited overs series in Sri Lanka. Now BCCI is looking at this as a permanent ‘blueprint’.

Eye on T20 World Cup 2026

India has recently (in March 2026) won the T20 World Cup title. Now the board aims to maintain its dominance. National Cricket Academy (NCA) coaches and selectors will keep a close eye on this pool of 35 players. In this, mainly those players will be selected who are expert in fearless batting and diverse bowling.
