Now many people also use mouthwash to clean their mouth. Its use has increased a lot especially among the youth, some recent research has claimed that excessive use of mouthwash can increase the risk of hypertension i.e. high blood pressure. Research has shown that some antibacterial mouthwashes can also eliminate the good bacteria present in the mouth. This may cause the problem of high BP.
According to research published in the National Library of Medicine, there are many types of good bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria help in producing nitric oxide in the body. The nerves of the body relax only with the help of nitric oxide. This keeps BP under control, but mouthwash attacks these bacteria and reduces them, this reduces nitric oxide production and increases the risk of high BP.
Not all mouthwashes are dangerous. There is risk only in those which contain strong antibacterial chemicals. There is no risk in mouthwashes which do not contain such chemicals or contain them in less quantity. Limited use of mouthwash is beneficial for the body and is very beneficial in maintaining good oral health. In such a situation, it is important to use them only as per need. There is no benefit in using it for fashion or at someone's request. If the doctor has advised then there is no problem in using it, but keep in mind that the mouthwash should not contain strong antibacterial chemicals.
Research has shown that people who use mouthwash only once or twice a week have no risk, but people who use it three to four times a day may be at risk of high BP. This is because excessive use increases the risk of destroying the good bacteria, which can cause high BP.
