Ghaziabad: Tensions gripped in the Indrapuri area of Ghaziabad on Sunday after unidentified men vandalised a statue of B R Ambedkar. The sit-in protests by protesters led to the traffic disruption on the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway

Sharing details of the incident, the police said that several suspects have been detained in the case for questioning in the vandalism incident, which reportedly took place on Saturday night. The authorities have also ordered a new statue.

Authorities have issued an order for a new Ambedkar statue

“A new statue has been ordered, and efforts are underway to identify the culprits. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined. Strict action will be taken against those found involved,” news agency PTI quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari as saying.

After the statue was found vandalised on Sunday morning, the activists of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and other outfits held a sit-in protest on the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway. They also blocked vehicular movement on the stretch. Soon after receiving the information a police team reached the spot and tried to identify the protesters.

Sloganeering at protest site

Among the senior officials who reached the spot were Loni Municipality Chairperson Ranjita Dhama, who voiced his support for the protesters and demanded tough actions against the culprits. There were also reports of sloganeering at the site as tensions increased briefly. Even as the police managed to reopen one lane, protesters have continued to block the other lane, demanding action against the culprits of the incident.

The police has said that the situation has been brought under control to maintain law and order in the area. Meanwhile, speaking to India Today, a police official said that while a team has been formed to probe the matter, two suspects have been detained in the case.
