New Delhi: Fresh controversy has engulfed FBI Director Kash Patel after a report alleged excessive drinking and erratic behaviour has emerged. This has prompted concern among officials about leadership at the United States’ top law enforcement agency, with allegations incoming of not just excessive drinking but of delayed and missed meetings due to behavioural issues.

Alarming report

The report published by The Atlantic is said to be based on interviews with more than two dozen current and former officials. It details episodes of alleged intoxication, unexplained absences and disruptions to official duties, drawn from the reported interviews. According to the report, officials have raised concerns that Patel was at times difficult to reach due to alleged drinking, which has also led to some meetings being reportedly delayed or rescheduled.

The allegations continue, with some members of his security detail allegedly struggling to wake him on certain occasions, even considering extraordinary measures to access him when he was unreachable behind locked doors. Such incidents have reportedly led to unease within the FBI and broader security establishment. In relation to this, some officials warned that inconsistent availability at the top could pose risks during a national emergency, further aggravating problems for Patel and his public image.

Patel denies claims, signals legal action

The report also ties these concerns to a broader pattern of behaviour, including alleged impulsive decision-making and questions over Patel’s familiarity with the agency’s operations. Patel has strongly denied the allegations, calling them false and politically motivated, and has threatened legal action against the publication. Responding publicly, he dismissed the report as a “hit piece” and suggested that such scrutiny reflects his effectiveness in the role.
