Gas Supply in India : The ongoing upheaval at the global level is affecting the entire world. All this had a major impact on Indian LPG cylinders. Due to this, the government has released new figures regarding the supply of cooking gas across the country. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, more than 1.725 million small LPG cylinders of 5 kg weight have been sold since March 23 till now, with more than 1.7 lakhs. These cylinders are especially useful for migrant workers, who face difficulties in procuring large size cylinders.
In a statement, the ministry noted that over 6,450 awareness camps have been organized by state-owned oil companies, particularly ‘oil marketing companies’, since April 3; More than 90,000 cylinders of 5 kg weight have been sold through these camps. These 5 kg ‘FTL’ cylinders are being supplied to the state governments, so that the respective state governments with the help of OMCs can provide these cylinders to the migrant workers in their states.
The total supply of commercial LPG has been increased to about 70 percent; It also includes an additional allocation of 10 percent based on improvement in conditions. On April 17, 8,216 MT of commercial LPG was sold, equivalent to about 4.32 lakh cylinders of 19-kg. Moreover, a total of 1,58,583 metric tonnes of commercial LPG has been sold since March 14. This figure also includes over 9,200 metric tonnes of ‘Auto LPG’.
According to the Ministry, there has been a shift in demand for auto LPG; Now public sector enterprises are being preferred over private companies. In the wake of this growing demand, auto LPG sales by PSU companies have recorded an increase of up to 70 percent. This growth has been particularly strong in states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Rajasthan and West Bengal.
According to the ministry, additional commercial LPG is being allocated to 22 states and Union Territories based on reforms to PNG expansion. Moreover, the ministry also clarified that since the month of March, more than 4.76 lakh PNG connections have been activated, while more than 5.33 lakh new customers have registered to get the connection. As of April 17, more than 37,500 PNG consumers have returned their LPG connections; This trend underlines the growing popularity of PNG.
Although the current global situation has affected the supply of LPG somewhat, the government has prioritized the needs of domestic consumers. The government also clarified that no LPG distributor has faced any gas stock-out or shortage. As of April 17, LPG’s online booking volume has reached around 98 percent. Additionally, to ensure transparency in delivery, more than 93 percent of deliveries are being processed through the ‘Delivery Authentication Code’ system. On a single day, April 17 alone, more than 52 lakh domestic LPG cylinders were delivered across the country; This proves the strength of the supply chain system.
