A man from Hyderabad claimed that he received water in a sealed oil can, when he ordered sunflower oil on a popular quick-commerce app, Zepto. The incident occurred in Medchal-Malkajgiri district.
The man identified as Sharath Yadav, had placed an order on the app for a can of cooking oil. After receiving the order, he opened the cooking oil can and discovered it was filled with water. He recorded a video of what he received and poured the content of the container into a cooking pan and showed that every drop of the can was just water.
Yadav said that the can was properly sealed and did not give rise to any concerns of either tampering or substitution during the time of delivery.
He immediately reached out to the Zepto store to report the issue. However, the staff dismissed his concerns and said that it was just a retail store and was not responsible for contents of the packaged product.
Sharath then escalated the matter legally, filing a complaint in the consumer court, saying that it was a serious lapse in quality control and consumer safety. He argued that consumers ordered branded goods on retail platforms and trusted sellers and delivery services to ensure product quality.
