New Delhi: Mumbai Indians have not been enjoying the best of the campaigns in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026. Though the five-times winners broke the jinx of winning their season-opening clash in the cash-rich league but that has been their only win so far.
Out of a total of five games played this edition, Mumbai have just won a single game and lost four, with Thursday’s defeat against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) being their fourth consecutive loss. Despite a good batting effort, where the side scored a competitive total, Mumbai were not able to restrict Punjab and ended up succumbing against a better side.
While the side has performed decently with the bat and ball, or at least in one department, in the almost all the matches yet they have not been able to deliver optimum results. After the recent loss, head coach Mahela Jayawardene has revealed the key reason behind Mumbai not getting it right in the 19th edition of the league, combining it with Jasprit Bumrah’s performance who has been wicketless so far.
As viewers, we have also been able to witness that the Mumbai Indians side has not been much effective in the powerplay and have failed to put pressure on the opposition. The same was echoed by the head coach who asserted that Bumrah has been bowling well but the team is not been able to put pressure in the powerplay.
Bumrah was smacked for 41 runs in four overs as Punjab Kings chased down the target of 196 with 21 balls and seven wickets to spare in their IPL contest.
‘They (opposition) know they don’t need to take too much risk against Bumrah. We tried a few different things which he is trying as well but they are batting well. I can’t put a finger (on something) and say that he hasn’t taken a wicket.’
Mumbai bowlers have though lacked the precision so far in this season and that’s something they need to work on, the head coach has said. Further talking about Rohit Sharma, he said that his injury is not that serious but he will take some more time before returning.
