LPG Gas Booking Fraud: Have you also received a message offering a discount on an LPG booking? If so, be on your guard, as these are scammers perpetrating fraud in the name of discounts.
LPG Scam: On one hand, people are distressed by gas shortages, while on the other, prices are skyrocketing. Amidst this situation, many individuals are receiving discount offers on gas cylinder bookings. Have you received such an offer? If you have, exercise caution, as it could be a scam—something the government has recently warned the public about.
Government Issues Warning
Recently, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology shared a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle. In this post, they explained that scammers are luring people into traps using "limited-time offers." The post stated: "Scammers love 'limited-time offers' because they prevent you from making a well-considered decision. In the case of essential services like LPG, you should only trust offers that appear on official government portals. If an offer seems too good to be true, assume it is a trap."
Scammers love a "Limited Time Offer" because it stops you from thinking clearly. In the world of essential services like LPG, the only "special deal" you should trust is the one reflecting on the official government portal. How to Identify the Scam
The government's post also outlines methods to help you identify these scammers. Learn about these three methods below to distinguish between genuine offers and fraudulent ones.
The 'Priority' Trap
Scammers will first claim that you have been "specially selected" as a priority customer and will urge you to make a hasty, unthinking decision. Their method of dangling bait is designed to be so enticing that almost anyone could easily fall for the deception.
The 'Limited Stock' Lie
These scammers will falsely claim that only "limited stock" remains available, advising you to book your cylinder as quickly as possible. However, you must not heed their advice.
The Fake Letter
Not only that, but these scammers will also send you a fake approval letter. They will inquire about an LPG dealership and demand a refundable fee.
Government Agencies Do Not Issue Such Offers
In this very post, the government has also clarified that no government agency extends such offers to its customers. They stated in the post: "Government agencies and oil companies—such as BPCL, Hindustan Petroleum, or Indian Oil Corporation—do not issue such limited-time links or offers for bookings."
If you encounter any such offer online or on social media, do not fall into this trap. Upon seeing such offers, your first step should be to visit the mylpg.in portal, where you will find all the authentic information.
