The travel plans of hundreds more British tourists are set to be hit again today as hundreds more flights are cancelled across Europe, with several UK airports impacted. Pilots at Lufthansa and its low-cost subsidiary Eurowings announced a two-day strike yesterday, disrupting travel plans for tens of thousands of passengers.

The strike, which concerns pension arrangements and working conditions, has resulted in the cancellation of over 1,000 flights and is set to continue today. Numerous flights have already been cancelled today with a string of UK airports hit by the disruption. It is believed that more than 4,500 passengers expected to travel to and from the UK today will be affected.

Lufthansa says they will be operating around one-third of their total short-haul schedule whilst half of their long-haul routes will be cancelled.

Meanwhile, Eurowings will operate 60% of its schedule. Approximately 570 landings and take-offs have been cancelled at Frankfurt Airport so far, affecting more than 50,000 passengers.

Elsewhere, at Munich Airport, approximately 720 flight cancellations have been reported over the two days of the strike.

The strike is expected to end at 11.59pm today, April 14.

The president of Union VC, Andreas Pinheiro said: "The Cockpit union feels compelled to take this step after the employer's side showed no real willingness to reach a solution in several collective bargaining disputes.

"Despite our deliberate decision not to take strike action over the Easter holidays, no serious offers have been made."

Lufthansa passengers due to travel today are being asked to check the status of their flight before setting out on their journey.

The carrier is advising passengers that if their flight is cancelled, they can either rebook once free of charge or request a full refund.

In a statement, the airline told passengers yesterday: "Lufthansa and Eurowings are working intensively to keep the impact on passengers as low as possible.

"We are trying to have as many flights as possible operated by other airlines within the Lufthansa Group and by partner airlines.

"However, despite these efforts, flight cancellations are unavoidable.

"Travelers who are affected by an irregularity will be informed accordingly, provided their contact details are stored in the booking.

"We ask passengers to check the status of their flight before setting out on their journey.

"We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the disproportionate and very short-notice strike announcement."
