Mangaluru: A 57-year-old Mohan Raj, a businessman from Kolya in Mangaluru, completed his first PUC nearly four decades ago before financial hardships and family responsibilities took over and he had to sacrifice his dream of pursuing law.
Now, 40 years later when Raj saw his son preparing for the PUC (pre-university college examinations) this year, it reignited his academic interest. Raj made a decision and appeared for the same exam as his son, fulfilling his long-held dream. PUC is equivalent to class 12 board exams in Karnataka, according to a report in Indian Express.
40 years of dream
“Going back to study after 40 years was far away from easy. I gave up my studies because my family needed financial support then. I was initially inspired by watching my son prepare. In a way, I motivated him, and he motivated me,” Raj told the daily.
While Raj’s son opted for Commerce, he took up HEPS [History, Economics, Political science and Sociology] in Kannada medium.
Raj enrolled at a coaching centre as well while balancing studies and his work. He attended classes in two shifts from 8 am to 11 am and again from 2.30 pm to 4 pm while fulfilling his business commitments.
‘My turn to finish what I started’
During this time, his three children Pruthvi, Prakruthi, and Kshithij, became his support system and helped him with notes and ensuring he stayed focused.
“Now I am satisfied. I have seen all three of my children do well. It was finally my turn to finish what I started,” Raj added. The result led to double celebration as he cleared all his subjects in the first attempt with 52 percent in Arts. His son Kshithij secured 67 percent in commerce.
Riding high on the achievement, Mohan says he now aims to the pursue Law. Raj has served as an inspiration that there is no age for learning and with determination and willpower, anyone can achieve their goals, no matter at what they they begin.
