Positioning wildlife conservation as a generational responsibility, Reliance Industries Executive Director Anant Ambani used the launch of Vantara University to call for a new class of “purpose-driven” veterinarians and scientists, in a keynote address at the unveiling of the institution in Gujarat’s Jamnagar.
Speaking at the foundation ceremony, Ambani framed the university as part of a long-term, almost civilisational project. “This is a 1,000-year vision for the planet,” he said, stressing that the future of conservation will depend on trained hands as much as on intent.
The address, delivered within the 3,000-acre Vantara wildlife rescue and rehabilitation facility, set the tone for what is being positioned as the world’s first dedicated university for wildlife conservation and veterinary sciences.
In his speech, Ambani talked about the idea of building capacity- not just infrastructure. “We want to create veterinarians and scientists for the world,” he shared, perhaps underlining gaps in global expertise in wildlife health, disease management, and conservation science.
He linked the need for such an institution to rising ecological pressures, including biodiversity loss and the spread of diseases across species. “Nature and animals are at the centre of this effort,” he noted, describing Vantara University as a response to challenges that are both scientific and moral.
Framing the initiative as rooted in “Mother Nature”, Ambani said the university’s purpose is to nurture professionals who combine compassion with technical knowledge - a blend he suggested is currently missing in many conservation systems.
The vision outlined in the keynote is reflected in the university’s planned academic structure. Vantara University will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, and specialised programmes across wildlife medicine and surgery, behavioural sciences, genetics, epidemiology, and conservation policy, among others.
The university is expected to function as a global hub, combining Vantara’s on-ground expertise with academic and research capabilities and building international collaborations over time.
While the launch marks the creation of a new academic institution, Ambani’s speech positioned Vantara University as part of a larger conservation effort, one that integrates rescue, research, education, and policy.
