Shreyas Iyer creates continuous pressure on Suryakumar Yadav through his performances in every match. Shreyas, who plays the number four position for Punjab Kings, achieves statistical results that most athletes find impossible to attain. He may not achieve a 229.44 batting average like Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the Indian Premier League, but he maintains an impressive batting average close to 55 while scoring at almost 181 runs per 100 balls.
The 3.0 version which has existed since 2025 delivers exceptional performance. Suryakumar has outperformed all other players by scoring more runs than him when batting at positions three and four in the IPL. Suryakumar maintains a batting average that exceeds his opponent by 1.83 yet his opponent maintains a higher batting average for his entire performance.
Shreyas has established himself as the premier middle-order batsman in the entire league. He led the Punjab Kings against Sunrisers Hyderabad to 220-run victory in Mullanpur. The batting partnership between Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh reached half-centuries, which created a foundation for success, but Shreyas prevented the team from collapsing when Cooper Connolly and Nehal Wadhera faced difficulties.
The anchor role required him to achieve a 209.09 strike rate for his performance. Shreyas earned Player of the Match honors because he performed better than Abhishek Sharma and Arya who batted with greater speed. The pitch conditions became more challenging after the new ball lost its shine, which caused most SRH batters to experience difficulties during the post-powerplay period. Shreyas maintained complete control over the match between the seventh and twentieth overs. His 69 off 33 balls helped PBKS chase the target with seven balls remaining.
The performance reached outstanding levels. He understood the surface conditions because he recognized its potential to help spinners. He faced Shivang Kumar and Harsh Dubey with caution , as he managed to score 12 runs from 11 balls. He achieved success against Jaydev Unadkat, Eshan Malinga, and Harshal Patel by scoring 55 runs within 20 balls.
His recent performance has triggered another discussion about why he does not play for India in T20I matches. Shreyas plays in Suryakumar’s position, which complicates selection. The captain must resign from his position for him to make his comeback. The decision to remove a captain who has led his team to victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup remains a difficult choice.
Shreyas' performance statistics create a powerful argument in his favor. Suryakumar possesses greater international experience which includes most difficult overseas matches but Shreyas has consistently outperformed Suryakumar in this particular format since the year 2025.
T20 stats at No. 3 & 4 since 2025:
| Suryakumar Yadav | 55 | 1646 | 38.27 | 154.99 | 0 | 10 | 84* |
| Shreyas Iyer | 19 | 711 | 54.69 | 180.91 | 0 | 0 | 97* |
Shreyas has played all his recent matches in the IPL because he missed the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last season due to injury. The numerical data delivers a powerful message. Suryakumar shows 40% lower batting average and 20% lower batting efficiency when compared to him.

The existing debate which argues that international cricket presents greater challenges actually creates increased stress for Suryakumar. Since 2025 he has maintained a 26 batting average and 147.16 strike rate in T20I matches. He has performed as India’s least effective batsman throughout the 2024–26 T20 World Cup period which created an impression that the team carried him.
India needs to start rebuilding now that the cycle has reached its conclusion. The current IPL 2026 performance makes it difficult to justify Shreyas' exclusion from the starting lineup instead of Suryakumar. The big question remains—will the BCCI take the bold decision to move on from one of India’s greatest T20I batters?
