Symptoms of esophagus cancer

In today’s fast-paced life, we often ignore small health problems. Symptoms like frequent cough, heartburn or mild difficulty in swallowing may seem normal, but they can sometimes be signs of serious diseases. One of these serious diseases is esophageal cancer.

The food pipe, called the esophagus, is a long tube connecting the throat to the stomach, which carries food to the stomach. When the cells of this tube start growing abnormally, cancer develops. This cancer can spread quickly, but if detected early, it is treatable and can have good outcomes.

The problem is that the initial symptoms are very mild, so people ignore them. Early signs which should never be ignored:-

– Frequent cough or sore throat
Difficulty swallowing food (especially food getting stuck in solid food like bread, rice)
– Problem of heartburn, pain or indigestion which increases
– Unexplained weight loss
– Change or hoarseness in voice
Feeling nauseous or tired after eating

These symptoms are mild in the beginning, but if they persist for more than two-three weeks, it is necessary to consult a doctor.

Who is at greater risk?

– People who smoke or consume tobacco
– excessive alcohol consumption
– People suffering from chronic acidity or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux)
– obese person
– People with habit of drinking very hot tea, coffee or liquids
– Age above 50 years, especially men

This cancer is quite common in India, especially in the north-eastern states and rural areas. Unhealthy eating habits, tobacco and pollution are its main reasons.

preventive measures

– Stop smoking and alcohol consumption completely
– Eat a healthy diet – drink more fruits, vegetables and water
– Reduce intake of spicy, fried and processed foods
– keep weight under control
– If you have acidity problem, get treatment as per doctor’s advice.

Doctors say that if there is repeated difficulty in swallowing food, then it is necessary to undergo endoscopy. Cancer can be prevented by early detection. Esophageal cancer grows silently, so even small complaints should be taken seriously.
