Artificial intelligence (AI) major Anthropic has blocked its Claude models from being used with OpenClaw, a third-party agent tool built by developer Peter Steinberger.
In a post on X, Steinberger wrote, “It's gonna be harder in the future to ensure OpenClaw still works with Anthropic models.”
The post included a screenshot showing that OpenClaw can no longer reliably connect to Claude under standard subscription plans, in line with Anthropic’s announcement on April 4.
OpenClaw allows users to run autonomous AI agents that can interact with apps and services, often requiring continuous model access. Steinberger’s tool had integrated Claude as one of its primary model options.
Anthropic has indicated that such usage patterns place heavier demands on its infrastructure than typical chatbot interactions. The company has been tightening controls on how its models are accessed, particularly through automated or agent-based systems.
Under the updated setup, developers seeking to use Claude with tools like OpenClaw may need to rely on separate API access and usage-based billing instead of standard subscriptions.
Meanwhile, OpenClaw recently introduced a plugin marketplace called ClawHub, alongside a slate of new AI features aimed at accelerating the development of autonomous agents.
The development comes on the sidelines of US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell holding an urgent meeting with major bank CEOs to alert them about cyber risks associated with Anthropic’s latest AI model, Mythos, per a report by Reuters on Friday.
