Kolkata: Today the whole country is celebrating the death anniversary of a great litterateur and patriot Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. On this day in 1894, this ‘sun’ of Indian literature had set, but the echo of the words written by him still runs like blood in the veins of every Indian.

‘Vande Mataram’ is a song which became the mantra of freedom for dependent India. On taking the name of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, the first thing that comes to mind is ‘Vande Mataram’. He composed this song in the 1870s, which was later made a part of his classic novel ‘Anandamath’ (1882). Apart from this, during the British rule, this song became the biggest source of strength for Indian revolutionaries. Be it lathi charge or hanging, the slogan of ‘Vande Mataram’ was always on the lips of every patriot. After independence, the first two stanzas of the song were adopted as the ‘national song’ of India.


‘Anandamath’ and the Sanyasi rebellion


Bankim Chandra ji worked to awaken sleeping India through his writings. His novel ‘Anandmath’ is based on the Sanyasi rebellion of the 18th century. This book not only created an uproar in the literary world, but also inspired the youth to stand against the British. A unique confluence of nationalism, devotion and social reform can be seen in his writings.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was one of the first two graduates of Calcutta University. He served as a Deputy Magistrate under the British Government for a long time. Despite being in government service, he never let his pen stop or bow down. He lit the torch of a new revolution in Bengali literature by starting a magazine called ‘Bangadarshan’.


Major works (Literary Legacy): Bankim Chandra is called the ‘Emperor of Literature’. Following are some of his major works:


Durgeshnandini: His First Bengali Novel (1865).
Kapalkundala: A mysterious and love based creation.
Devi Chaudhurani: The story of women empowerment and struggle against British rule.
Rajmohan’s Wife: His first and only English novel.


Today’s Day: (Confluence of Sacrifice and Inspiration) – Today, 8th April, is known for two great heroes in Indian history. On this day, Mangal Pandey, the great leader of the first freedom struggle of 1857, was hanged, and on this day, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, who spread the light of nationalism through literature, died.


Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was not just a writer, he was a sage who taught us to see India as ‘Mother India’. On his death anniversary the entire country pays homage to him.
