External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday hosted Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and his high-level delegation. The main objective of the meeting was to discuss regional and international issues, as well as to deeply understand the bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh. Jaishankar discussed various aspects of strengthening India-Bangladesh relations with the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister.

Let us tell you, in this meeting, emphasis was laid on increasing cooperation and contact between the two countries. “Delighted to host Bangladeshi FM Khalilur Rahman and his delegation this afternoon. We discussed strengthening bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and global developments. We agreed to maintain close contacts between the two countries,” EAM Jaishankar wrote in a post on X.

Let us tell you, Khalilur Rahman had reached New Delhi for “Goodwill Visit”. According to the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh, the visit will prove to be an important step in taking the cooperation between the two countries to more productive and sustainable heights.

At the same time, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on X, “Bangladesh FM Khalilur Rahman was warmly welcomed upon his arrival in New Delhi today. India and Bangladesh have deep and historical relations, which are based on strong people-to-people ties. This visit will further strengthen the India-Bangladesh partnership.”

Let us tell you, this visit of Rahman was an important stopover before the Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) to be held in Mauritius. The visit program of Bangladesh Foreign Minister to India included high-level meetings with India’s National Security Advisor and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

“The purpose of these meetings is to promote the stability and development of relations based on mutual respect, trust and common interests,” Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said. This visit, especially after the political change, is being considered an important step towards strengthening the relations between the two countries.

The visit is being seen as a means to renew engagement and enhance cooperation in India-Bangladesh relations. India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Prannoy Verma met Prime Minister Tariq Rahman in Dhaka, where they discussed multi-sectoral cooperation and reiterated India’s “positive and constructive” approach.

This high-level diplomatic mission between Bangladesh and India is a sign of improving relations which were going through ups and downs in the last few years. Particularly, the visit assumes significance given the complications in relations after the BNP-led government came to power and reports of violence against Hindu minorities.
