Bureau Prayagraj. The impeachment motion presented by 193 opposition MPs against the country’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has been rejected. The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and the Speaker of the Lok Sabha rejected the proposal after evaluating all its aspects. This decision is a big relief for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Notice of a motion was given by 63 members of the Rajya Sabha on 12 March 2026. This notice was given under the provisions of Article 324(5) and Article 124(4) of the Indian Constitution as well as Section 11(2) of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Tenure) Act, 2023 and the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968. Through this proposal, a demand was made to remove Chief Election Commissioner of India Gyanesh Kumar from his post.
The Rajya Sabha Chairman, after considering the notice and carefully and impartially assessing all the relevant aspects and issues, refused to accept it. The Chairman took this decision using the powers conferred on him under Section 3 of the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968. With this decision, the process to the demand for removal of Gyanesh Kumar has ended for the time being.
