New Delhi: India’s largest messaging platform has released fresh enforcement data, showing a sharp rise in action against misuse. In February 2026 alone, WhatsApp banned over 54 lakh Indian accounts as part of its ongoing compliance under the IT Rules, 2021.

The update comes at a time when spam, fraud, and suspicious activity continue to rise across messaging platforms.

Over 54 lakh accounts banned in February

As per WhatsApp’s latest transparency report, 54,82,423 accounts were banned between 1 February and 28 February 2026.

Of these, 13,86,846 accounts were proactively banned by the platform. This means the action was taken before any user complaints were filed, indicating increased reliance on AI-led detection systems and internal monitoring tools.

The company said, “We are particularly focused on prevention because we believe it is much better to stop harmful activity from happening in the first place than to detect it after harm has occurred.”

Grievance data shows user activity trends

During the same period, WhatsApp received 19,496 user grievances in India. A large share of these were linked to ban appeals, with 10,930 cases reported. Out of these, only 302 accounts were actioned after review.

Other complaints included account support and product-related queries. Safety-related grievances were relatively low, and the platform noted that such issues are usually addressed through its in-app reporting tools rather than direct action from email complaints.

How WhatsApp’s detection systems works

WhatsApp outlined that its abuse detection works across multiple stages of an account’s lifecycle. This includes checks during account registration, monitoring during messaging activity, and action based on user feedback such as reports and blocks.

With over 120 million users globally and a massive footprint in India, the data reflects a shift towards stricter platform governance. Messaging apps are under increasing pressure to act quickly on abuse while maintaining user privacy.
