Yawning: A Common Sign or a Serious Problem?

Are you yawning frequently during the day? If you are ignoring it as a result of fatigue or lack of sleep, then be careful. Yawning is usually a sign of fatigue, boredom or sleep, but if it is happening repeatedly for no apparent reason, it could be a sign of serious brain problems.

Scientists believe that yawning helps balance the temperature of the brain. When the brain overheats or finds it difficult to regulate temperature, cool air is inhaled through yawning. This cools the brain and maintains its efficiency. But if yawning is excessive and without reason, it could be a sign of neurological problems.

Clinical research has shown that persistent yawning may be associated with conditions such as stroke, epilepsy or brain lesions. In some cases, it may also be part of a frontal lobe seizure. In stroke patients, the number of yawns increases when there is a problem, especially in the areas of the insula and caudate nucleus. It is also common in problems involving the brain stem or temporal lobe.

Yawning is also to our autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary activities like heartbeat, blood pressure and digestion. Excessive yawning increases parasympathetic activity, which is a signal for the body to relax. But if this imbalance persists for a long time, it can become a matter of concern. However, yawning every time is not an alarm bell. Sometimes it can also be due to lack of sleep, fatigue from overwork, stress or low oxygen.

When to contact a doctor?

If these symptoms appear along with yawning, consult a doctor immediately:

Dizziness

feeling weak

difficulty in thinking

Problems like headache or vomiting

Experts say that if yawning is happening several times a day without any reason or has increased suddenly, then a neurologist should be examined. The exact cause can be determined by MRI, EEG or other tests. According to experts, it can be controlled by adopting a healthy lifestyle – get good sleep, exercise, reduce stress and eat a balanced diet. But if the problem persists, do not treat yourself, consult a doctor. Ignoring frequent yawning can prove costly.
