A Bengaluru-based cardiologist has raised concern over a growing health trend, warning that dangerously high cholesterol levels are increasingly being detected among young urban adults.

Alarming rise in young patients

Dr Somalaram Venkatesh, who recently shifted his practice to East Bengaluru, shared in a viral X post that he is now regularly encountering young patients with extremely high LDL (bad cholesterol) levels.

He noted that such cases were traditionally more common among older individuals, but the pattern is now rapidly changing, with younger age groups increasingly at risk.

Lifestyle factors driving the trend

The rise in cholesterol levels is being linked to urban lifestyles marked by sedentary work routines, high stress, irregular sleep patterns, and unhealthy dietary habits.

Experts say that frequent consumption of processed foods, lack of physical activity, and prolonged screen time are contributing significantly to poor heart health among young professionals.

Silent risk with serious consequences

High LDL cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, often developing silently without visible symptoms. If left unchecked, it can lead to serious conditions such as heart attacks and strokes at a younger age.

Doctors warn that many individuals remain unaware of their cholesterol levels until complications arise.

Need for early awareness and lifestyle changes

Medical professionals emphasise the importance of regular health check-ups, especially for working professionals in high-pressure environments.

Simple lifestyle modifications—such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and adequate sleep—can significantly reduce risks.

A wake-up call for urban youth

The cardiologist’s observations have sparked widespread discussion online, with many users acknowledging the impact of modern lifestyles on health.

The trend serves as a reminder that preventive care and mindful living are essential to avoid long-term health complications.
