Shreyas Iyer fined ₹24 lakh for second slow over-rate offense

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined ₹24 lakh for a slow over-rate during his team's match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

This is the second time in as many matches that Iyer has been penalized for the same offense.

The IPL governing body imposed a stricter penalty this time, with the rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player also facing fines.

The IPL governing body issued a statement confirming the penalty imposed on Iyer.

"Punjab Kings Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No.7 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai," it read.

The statement further clarified that since this was his team's second offense of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which relates to minimum over-rate offenses, Iyer was fined ₹24 lakh.

Along with Iyer, the rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, have also been fined.

The IPL governing body stated that they will be fined either ₹6 lakh or 25% of their respective match fees, whichever is lower.

This decision highlights how seriously the league takes violations related to maintaining a proper over-rate during matches.

PBKS chased down 210 target vs CSK
Match recap

In their match against CSK, PBKS chased down a target of 210 runs with eight balls to spare. This came after a strong all-round performance from the team.

Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh provided an ideal start for PBKS in the chase with a 61-run stand for the opening wicket in just over four overs.

Iyer, who himself scored a half-century, praised his openers after the match, calling their aggressive start phenomenal.
