It’s a familiar sight at airports – travellers adding some form of "identification marker" to their suitcase before setting off on holiday. It helps them quickly recognise their bag on the carousel after landing, while also giving peace of mind they won’t mistakenly take someone else’s luggage.
But according to a travel-focused TikTok channel, this common habit might not be as helpful as it seems- and could even create unexpected issues. In a video, they explained: "Attention travellers! Tying ribbons onto your suitcase may seem like a fun and simple way to personalise your luggage, but it can actually cause serious problems.
"A baggage handler has warned that these colourful ribbons can get caught in airport machinery, which may lead to delays, or even result in your luggage being damaged or lost."
As an alternative, luggage company Eminent suggests opting for colourful stickers or a protective suitcase cover to make your bag stand out safely.
The brand said: "Choosing the right luggage tags and accessories is a great way to make your suitcase more visible, while adding personality and practicality.
"When selecting luggage tags, go for bold colours or striking designs that are easy to identify on a crowded carousel.
"Bright shades, patterns, or playful shapes - such as animals or travel-inspired designs - can help your luggage stand out instantly.
"It’s also important to focus on durability. Pick tags made from sturdy materials like leather, silicone, or reinforced plastic, so they can withstand the wear and tear of travel.
"Make sure the fastening, whether it’s a strap or buckle, is strong and secure. Some tags also feature locking mechanisms for extra protection."
Travellers online have also shared their own creative methods. One Reddit user wrote: "I wrap red duct tape around the suitcase handle - it doesn’t come off.
"It’s not pretty, but it’s easy to recognise, and the texture makes it obvious if someone else picks it up. I got the idea from a now-retired United captain."
Another commented: "My dad marks every side with red paint squares. He travels all the time." A third added: "I use duct tape with penguins on it. I’ve never seen anyone else with the same design."
One user recalled a particularly amusing experience: "One of my suitcases is bright pink with black polka dots and a huge Hello Kitty face on it.
"It got left behind by the airline on my last trip (long story), and when I was given the lost luggage form, it had already been filled in - describing my suitcase as 'pink with no distinguishing features'.
"It arrived at my hotel the next morning, thankfully. We do follow this advice though - all our luggage is very distinctive, with unique tags and stickers. It just made me laugh that my most unusual suitcase was simply described as 'pink'."
