Mike Tindall received a telling-off from his royal mother-in-law, Princess Anne, after defeating her cherished Scotland side in a rugby match. The pair have known each other since he met Zara Phillips, with the couple tying the knot in 2011 while Tindall was still playing professionally.

The ex-rugby star represented Gloucester and Bath, winning 75 caps for England. Throughout his career, he faced Scotland numerous times in the Six Nations Championship, and he remembered one occasion when he "got one over" his mother-in-law.

The Princess Royal has been a long-standing supporter of Scotland since the 1980s after being appointed patron of the Scottish Rugby Union in 1986.

She regularly attends Scotland fixtures and found herself in an uncomfortable situation with Tindall following England's triumph over their historic rivals. Speaking to Closer magazine last year, the 47-year-old recalled an amusing way to savour a win in the Princess' company.

Tindall said: "Most fellas want to get something over on their mother-in-law. It's quite niche if you're the captain of the England team and you play Scotland at Twickenham and, when you win, you're receiving the trophy from your mother-in-law.

"I don't like the majority of the RFU (Rugby Football Union), but I shook every one of their hands and I kept her waiting."

Tindall believes that Princess Anne was clearly unimpressed with his behaviour and pressed him to speed up his victory lap. He added: "She was like 'Move on, Michael.' I was like 'Debrief over lunch tomorrow?', and she said, 'Move on, Michael.'"

The exchange between Tindall and his mother-in-law demonstrates the playful dynamic of their relationship, with the capacity to share a laugh. Despite the awkwardness of the moment, the former rugby star managed to inject some humour into the trophy presentation.

These days, Tindall is frequently seen accompanying Zara at events and enjoying the privileges of Royal life. The ex-Gloucester star retired in 2014 and won over a new audience on I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in 2022.
