Lots of people love the idea of jetting off on holiday, but British tourists in Tenerife have reported being left disappointed recently. While it's always lovely to relax and get some sun on your skin, sometimes events unfold that are totally out of people's control, as some travellers recently found out.

One Brit who arrived in Tenerife was met with something she least expected when she landed. Danni McNamara shared her experience on TikTok as her travel adventure got off to a very bizarre start when she arrived at the destination ready to top up her tan and recharge her batteries while on holiday.

She shared her experience online as she couldn't believe what happened. It comes after tourists visiting the hotspot were told lengthy queues could be seen at a popular airport on the island.

Danni posted a video sharing the weather yesterday (March 31), and it's fair to say it left her gobsmacked. Over the top of the clip, she wrote: "When the calima hits Tenerife."

You then see her opening her balcony door to be met with what can only be described as an orange mist. It was not the sunny sky she expected to see.

The video got a lot of people talking, and several people commented too. One person said: "We just arrived to this."

Another added: "So glad I missed it. Was a lovely week." Danni admitted it's a "shame", but noted the weather is still "very warm".

Even so, other tourists have also posted videos of it, with some claiming it "ruined" their holidays. Philip Pundrich claimed the weather "ruined the whole day" in his video, which got many others talking too.

One person replied saying: "Why is everyone wearing masks?" To this, Philip responded: "It's a sandstorm, that's why."

Elsewhere, another social media user noted: "Rubbish weather. I sold my apartment in the last two years. Weather was rubbish."

Someone else claimed: "The weather here has been bad this year, so it's not a good time for you to come and visit." Meanwhile, one more commented: "Not as grim as my seven days in Tenerife last week with that storm. Trust me."

Despite the calima, some said the weather has still been warm, and they managed to enjoy their time away. It's still not what you expect to see when you're abroad though.

What's happening?

If you've never heard of a calima before, it's a hot, oppressing dust and sand-laden, southerly to south-easterly, sometimes easterly wind in the Canary Islands region. It is especially prevalent in winter.

Usually, it lasts for a few days, but it can also continue for longer. Tourists need to be vigilant if taking to the beach, as you can still burn through the clouds, so don't be deceived.

Ensure you and your skin are protected. In the past few days, it's been reported the dust cloud has been sweeping across the Canary Islands, and experts have estimated it’s around "1,300km wide".

Authorities have warned both residents and tourists to take health precautions. This particular calima is claimed to be more extreme than normal, according to Canarian Weekly.
