New Delhi: Tiger Woods will undergo treatment after pleading not guilty to DUI charges and will miss the the year’s first major Augusta Masters.


The 15-time major champion was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and then released on bail after a car crash near his home in Florida last week.


“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods posted on social media.


“I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”


The 50-year-old pleaded not guilty to DUI charges and requested a trial with a jury, with his next court appearance scheduled for May 5, though he doesn’t have to appear in person for any proceeding prior to a trial.


Woods said that he was distracted bhile driving as probale cause for the crasg as he was looking at his phone and didn’t realise the car in front of him had slowed down.


Woods returned to competitive golf at the TGL Finals last week, since missing the cut at the British Open in July 2024.


Woods had then said he was trying to prepare himself for the April 9-12 Masters at Augusta National, but tournament organisers confirmed the five-time champion won’t make an appearance.


“Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being,” Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley said in a statement.


“Although Tiger will not be joining us next week, his presence will be felt here in Augusta.”


“Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport whose impact extends far beyond his achievements on the course,” the PGA Tour said in a statement.


“But above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and well-being. Tiger continues to have our full support as he takes this important step.”
