Yorkshire Vet star Peter Wright found himself deeply troubled as he faced a "difficult" emergency just moments into the latest episode.

During Tuesday's (March 31) instalment of the hugely popular Channel 5 show, Peter made a welcome return to our screens as he once again dedicated himself to helping animals in distress.

Viewers watched the vet journey to the North Yorkshire coast to treat one-year-old pony Sparkles, who had sustained a nasty injury after running into a fence, leaving her owner understandably anxious.

She said: "I am a little bit worried. We will just have to wait and see what happens and see how she goes." It was evident Peter had a tough task ahead as he explained: "I'm just working out how we can put it back together again."

He then admitted: "My concern is the shape of the wound, it's in a pretty difficult place because it's in the cook of the elbow to the low portion of the flap. It certainly has a blood supply coming down, so there's a lot of blood at the moment and until we can see what we can do."

Despite the mounting pressure, Peter rose to the challenge and threw himself into performing emergency 'al fresco' surgery on the stricken pony.

The procedure appeared to progress smoothly as Peter remarked: "It's going quite well really. I'm quite pleased with how it's coming together."

Following a nail-biting moment, he successfully completed the operation on Sparkles. Later in the episode, Peter went to check on Sparkle's recovery and was delighted to find that she was healing remarkably well.

Offering some guidance to Sparkle's owner, he explained: "As that scab starts to settle down and drop off, I would just put a little bit of oil on there to keep it supple.

"That will encourage further healing as the scar drops off - there's going to be virtually no scarring there at all, which is great."

Elsewhere in the programme, Peter travelled to Whitby to lend a hand at a wildlife sanctuary, where staff are hopeful that two swans, which have been subjected to bullying, will soon be fit enough to be released back into the wild.

Meanwhile, Julian Norton paid a visit to a young therapy sheep whose owner was deeply concerned about significant wool loss.
