A rare wildlife moment unfolded at Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, when a tigress was seen climbing a tree while attempting to hunt a bird, an unusual behaviour for a species typically associated with ground-based hunting.

The incident took place in the Padam Talao area of Zone 3, where a tigress was spotted during a morning safari. The post was shared by Dr. PM Dhakate (@paragenetics) on the social media platform X. In the short and rather interesting clip, the tigress is seen busy with a grey heron nest.

Unusual hunt caught on cameraThe video shared on social media is about 59 seconds long, but it’s easy to imagine that the entire sequence must have taken longer. This is because the branch the tigress was climbing appears highly unstable. The clip shows the tigress already holding a heron chick as the nest gets disturbed. However, she drops the chick and readjusts her position on the precarious perch. As she struggles to balance and reach her meal, the tourists are left feeling sorry for the chick, yet can’t help but marvel at the rare sight unfolding before their eyes.

Interestingly, the tigress is also seen eyeing and moving toward a second bird perched precariously at the far end of the branch, all while maintaining her balance with surprising ease. Some birders online believe the second bird is also a juvenile, while others suggest it may be the adult—possibly the mother—refusing to abandon the nest. A small section of the internet remains divided, and there is no clear answer as to what ultimately happened to the second bird. Did it manage to fly away, or did it meet a similar fate?

We might not have any answer to that question, but here’s what we know for sure: the tigress’ hunting behaviour was unusual for sure.

Why the sighting stands outTigers are not typically known to climb trees, especially during hunts, making such behaviour extremely uncommon in the wild. Wildlife experts note that while tigers are capable climbers, they rarely do so unless necessary, and even less frequently in pursuit of prey.

The sighting highlights the unpredictability of wildlife behaviour in Ranthambore, one of India’s most prominent tiger reserves, where such moments continue to draw tourists and wildlife enthusiasts from across the country.

For visitors present during the safari, the encounter must have been the highlight of their trip. The brief but dramatic sequence offered a glimpse into the adaptability of predators in the wild, even when the hunt does not succeed.
